The Red Swamp Story · Est. 2015

Ten Years
of Smoker-
Metal.

From a 2015 talent-show win at Budapest's A38 ship to Wacken Open Air, three full-length records, and the long-awaited fourth — Peace and Hate, out 11.05.2026.

§ 01 — Who they are

Stoner/sludge metal — "smoker-metal" to friends and fans — bandits Red Swamp might be familiar to anyone keeping a keen eye on the Eastern European underground metal scene. Since forming in 2015 they have released three albums: Tiszassippi, Desertdrive and most recently Time to Die, all receiving acclaim internationally and at home in Hungary — scoring 9/10, 10/10 and 10/10 respectively in Hungarian Metal Hammer Magazine, Hammerworld.

The band leveled up in 2024 and showed a new, darker side of themselves — delving into progressive grooves and song structures, varied vocals crowning their new, intricate tracks with soaring choruses and guttural snarls.

Red Swamp have supported Clutch, 1000Mods, Stoned Jesus, Dopelord, Karma to Burn, Planet of Zeus, Khirki and more international acts along with Hungary's biggest metal bands. The smokesome foursome also brought their unique blend of heaviness to Wacken: Open Air 2022 after winning Hungary's Wacken Metal Battle. Their style is best described as a modern interpretation of Lamb of God, Black Sabbath, Pantera, Gojira and even Faith No More: ten-ton riffs, interesting song structures and memorable vocals with a distinctive and unique pulse.

New Line-Up.
New Direction.

After the departure of founding member Zoli Bereczki, Red Swamp recruited long-time friend and guitar wunderkind Laci Csóka to guitar duties, who quickly made the older songs his own and found instant chemistry with existing members.

The band also made a conscious decision to improve upon their base sound and songwriting — keeping the gargantuan riffs, but adding more weight, technicality, melody, and structural unpredictability to their new tracks. This pushed their sonic presence in a more modern direction, incorporating an increasing number of guitar effects, vocal layers and less common time-signatures into their creative process.

The band celebrated 10 years of power in September 2025 with a sold-out show at the legendary Hungarian club Dürer Kert in Budapest. All four new singles will feature on Red Swamp's long-awaited fourth album, Peace and Hate, coming 11.05.2026.

"Singles like Born to Bleed and I am the Sun show a more progressive side of the band, while Takarodó and Nothingman are more conventionally crafted for faster interpretation."

§ 03 — Third LP

Time to Die.

The band's third full-length album took a bit more time to complete, thanks to the worldwide Covid pandemic, but it finally saw light in January of 2022. While initially conceptualized to reflect the growing anxiety, unease and restlessness caused by climate change and reactionary politics across the globe, the pandemic increasingly magnified these problems and added even more wood to Red Swamp's angry fire.

The 7+1 track behemoth is the band's most eclectic and experimental record yet — with tracks ranging from thrash-metal inspired burner Quarantine to moody epic tune Push, with a song reminiscent of grunge in No Limits and complex bluesy riff-monster Common Ground, all while tracks Goddamn, Stoned and Time to Die show that the group hasn't abandoned its sludgy, southern stoner roots.

Five music videos have been released from the album: Push, Quarantine, Stoned, Goddamn and Time to Die. The Quarantine video — a horror-parody shot in 24 hours over two days with cinematographer Ricsi Horváth — remains the band's most ambitious to date, written and directed by vocalist Greg Kovács.

"All the lyrics deal with the end of the world in either a personal, subjective or global, historic capacity — searching for accountability in a society that does its best to avoid it."

§ 04 — Second LP

Desertdrive.

After touring their first album in Hungary and Austria, Red Swamp jumped back into songwriting, which resulted in a plethora of songs, riffs and jams out of which 8 tracks made it onto their sophomore release, Desertdrive. The album is a step up in every way: sludgy, ten-ton riffs are given room to breathe and swirl around diverse, enduring and raw vocals.

The band recruited Hungarian drummer wunderkind Márton Veress (ex-member of Chris Amott's Armageddon) to play on the album. Recorded as part of the National Cultural Fund's Sound Program at the famous SuperSize Recordings studio in Törökbálint, with final mixing and mastering by guitarist Zoltán Bereczki. Released by Hunnia Records on April 20, 2018 (#420).

The first music video, Waste, took the honorable first place on the Music Channel Hungary Rock Chart. Castaways was shot at the album debut concert in Akvárium Klub, where they opened for Greek stoner band 1000mods to a near-full house. Hungarian Metal Hammer gave the album a perfect 10/10.

"A fresh, dirty sounding stoner-sludge metal record that is varied in approach, but deliberate and deft in execution."

§ 05 — Debut LP

Tiszassippi.

As the result of their little-over-a-year existence, they self-released their first full-length album Tiszassippi — coining the phrase from local Hungarian river Tisza and meshing it with the mighty Mississippi — on September 21st, 2016, featuring 10 songs.

The LP was mastered by none other than Swedish maestro Jens Bogren from Fascination Studios, who probably doesn't need an introduction (At the Gates, Soilwork, Arch Enemy). The album represents the evolution the band went through in their first year — strong, heavy grooves and riffs with memorable vocals to keep the listener on edge.

Two music videos (Tiszassippi and Bitter Paradise) and two lyric videos (Drain and Holy Burden) were released. The album was promoted at Rockmaraton, Efott and Azfeszt, and on the band's "Support the Habit" tour.

§ 06 — The Beginnings

Three songs, five hundred bands.

The band formed in 2015 and their beginnings are quite humble. They first released a 3-song EP not long after forming that made the rounds on quite a few choice stoner-sludge-doom blogs and pages, with stellar reviews.

The songs on the release also helped them to win first place in a major national musical talent competition in Hungary — out of about 500 applicants in 5 genres — cultivated by the well-known venue A38 ship, called Talentometer. The prizes led them across their home country and abroad, headlining their own "Support the Habit" tour and opening for and supporting well-known local and international bands with great success: a sold-out show with Clutch (US), Karma to Burn (US) and Sons of Morpheus (CH).
